Ravens

There aren't many birds to be seen in Dawson in winter. We have seen a few jays, ptarmigan, and of course: ravens.

What first I thought were crows, this is an entirely different bird. The raven is larger with a different beak and wing tips. Its flight is different too with more of a soaring style.

Like the crow, ravens are highly social, intelligent and vocal, with a great variety of voices.

One day I watched, with others, as a group of ten ravens helped themselves to some bags of groceries from the back of a pick-up. Two ravens were seemingly standing guard while the others picked and carried items to a spot where they either shared or fought over the loot.

Viewing the heist and shaking his head, an older gentleman said, to no one in particular, "He won't do that again."
